In Class Residencies

Our residency programs are a new way to engage your students in the classroom! YTN provides an arts educator to integrate into your classroom curriculum, and bring a book, lesson, or topic to life! These residencies can be tailored in length and scope to the needs and goals of your classroom.

Playwriting Project

Youth Theatre Northwest’s Playwriting Project works with a class of students to teach them about the basics of playwriting, guide them through writing their plays, fully producing those plays, and letting each student find their voice. The Playwriting Project is a 6-week process, usually taught in class to 20 or more students.

This program develops students' ability to express themselves creatively, receive and administer critical feedback, craft their own voices, ideas, and identities. From the rehearsal period, students also engage in project-based learning, practice their abilities of speech and expression, and ability to collaborate with others.

The following is a basic outline of the Playwriting Project Curriculum:

Unit 1: Playwriting 101

The Playwriting Instructor will take the whole class through the basics of playwriting for a week, and at the end of that week each student will submit a proposal for a 5–10-minute play they wish to create.

Unit 2: Writing and Workshop
The Playwriting Instructor will then work with the student playwrights to help craft their proposals into full plays.

Unit 3: Rehearsal and Performance
Directors are brought in for the finished plays, and the students are cast in the plays. The directors rehearse the students in the plays, blocking and adding technical elements. At the end of the program, there is a performance of all the plays, where family and friends are invited to celebrate the students' hard work!
